Mobile Speed Cameras
Drivers can be caught speeding with devices called mobile speed cameras. The police use this camera to emit a high frequency or radar beam across the road. A photograph is taken when a driver is gong faster than the pre-set limit. The camera is set to detect traffic that is away or forward. Mobile speed camera can be operated either manually or automatic. Certain information shows up when a picture is taken such as speed limit, vehicle speed, time of offense and the date. The site location number and the film number will also be shown. The pictures usually need to be verified before a ticket can be given to the driver that was speeding. This is to make sure the make and model of the car and the license plate number is clear and matches the license plate number in the pictures. The picture of the driver also needs to be clear or match their driver’s license picture.
An approved institution will test mobile speed camera before they are used to catch speeders. This is required by the Home Office and Department of Transport guidelines. Speed cameras come in several different sizes. The smaller camera can be easily hidden from view. Police sometimes hide them in their vans, motorcycles and cars. It’s a requirement in some areas that a speed camera is visible from a certain distance. Speed cameras are also used at night. People may think they’re safer at night while walking or driving but more accidents occur because it’s difficult to see. Speed limits need to be followed just as much during the night as during the day.
There are many speed trap devices that may alert of speed cameras. One device is called a Road Angel which may have a laser sensor that can protect you form mobile camera lasers. The sensor is plugged into the back of the Road Angel. Another device that can alert you to mobile speed camera is the Micro Pilot. This device has visual and audible alarms. The GPS Speed Warning Device has a system that warns you when you come close to a speed camera. It also has a receiver that concludes your car’s speed, heading and co-ordinates.
Some studies show that mobile speed cameras reduce car crashes. Some areas require that signs are put anywhere there is a speed camera so drivers can clearly see them. This is for the protection of the driver so they don’t brake quickly and cause an accident. If a hidden mobile speed camera has a warning sign than drivers will usually slow down.
