a speed camera

When you are driving along on a roadway it is very possible that you will see a speed camera along the side of the road.  These cameras are cropping up along roadsides everywhere and they are bringing with them a good deal of controversy.  There are many people that feel that these cameras are not good, but prior to making your own conclusions it would be helpful to learn about how they work, why they are used and the possible advances that technology could bring with them.

The first point that needs to be covered is realizing that a speed camera has likely been installed along a roadway because official have concerns of some kind about this stretch in the road.  A speed camera is usually installed in a location where a large number of accidents occur.  This will be especially true if the accidents were caused by excessive speed.  Another reason would be if there is an area that is known to be filled with speeders and officials cannot monitor it they will likely install a speed camera.

How does a speed camera actually work?  Basically, its primary function is to take a picture of a car that is speeding.  As a speeding car passes one of the cameras, the device will check its speed by sending electromagnetic waves out to the passing car.  The device waits for the waves to return and uses the results to judge your speed.  If the vehicle is travelling faster than the cameras parameters have been set to allow it will date a digital image of the speeding vehicle.  At that point, the picture is encrypted using an internet connection and sent to a central processing center.  Next, the encrypted image is examined so that the cars registration information can be retrieved to record the details of the speeding infraction.  Officials will then cross check the registration information to verify that the car is not a rental or reported as stolen.  After the vehicle has been checked and cleared a speeding citation will be mailed to the owner of the vehicle with instructions on how to pay the fine.

Technology is known to bring on many different evolutions and the possibilities for the evolution of a speed camera are no different.  Currently work is being done to develop the technology used in speed cameras to them to assess the distance between two cars.  The purpose of this would be to increase safety of roadways but reducing the number of drivers that tailgate.  Another area that is in development is the ability to determine if turn signals are being used or not.   Once these technologies are developed and put into action you can count on more citations being issued.  Chances are that the ticketing process will be much the same as that of the speeding ticket process.
